Lasting Encounter June Café Wall Exhibition

A Lasting Encounter – Breda Stacey

Café Wall Exhibition

12th – 30th June

Breda Stacey is a Wexford based painter who graduated from Wexford School of Art & Design (Carlow IT) with a B.A. (Hons) in Art (First Class Honours) in June 2016.   Her degree show work was shortlisted for the RDS Visual Arts Awards, 2016.   In November/December 2016 she undertook a month long residency at the Burren College of Art, Ballyvaughan, Co.Clare.  This year she will exhibit work in London and Edinburgh and in July/August selected works will be exhibited in a major group exhibition of Wexford artists to be held in Wexford Arts Centre/Wexford County Council.

Breda Stacey describes her paintings as alternative ways of seeing through colour, form, and space. The forms in her paintings may come out of the unconscious world, some hidden extended reality or out of a specific landscape or place. As they evolve, through layers of colour, they take their own directions and seem to form their own clusters and bonds. They can hold within them strong associations to the world yet at the same time they can appear to completely reject everything about it.  They are held together with their own inner forces and style.

The paintings come out of Stacey’s utter fascination with and love of the formal, painterly conventions and properties of paint, the materials and mediums, the flat surfaces and the technicalities of colour, form and space.  ‘I am obsessed with oil paint, its materiality and viscosity along with its consistency, speed and fluidity’.   Using materials in unconventional ways makes space not just for new ‘possibilities’ in form but perhaps for contemplation of the unfamiliar, the unrecognisable. These paintings could also be said to be still and timeless landscape forms, empty of emotional or physical agitation.
