Exhibition of Paintings by Kathrine Geoghegan
March Café Wall Exhibition

‘Although I have a great love of plants, I’m not that kind of a botanical artist who works from a more scientific discipline. I take inspiration from our native plants and their beautiful forms, look at them, see how the light and shadow play with the forms, and use this to convey a feeling or emotion.

This work concerns itself with the endurance of the Irish spirit. I have sought out these plants in urban, suburban and rural settings – from Mount Street to Tallaght, from Dunfanaghy to Ballinskelligs. These plants have grown there for centuries. They are survivors.

To me they embody qualities of courage, and tenacity, reflecting our own spirit, the spirit of the Irish people. Over the past century, we Irish have taken our place on the European and World stage. Our culture has radiated far and wide – our literature, music, dance and art. Our language is officially recognised, an intrinsic part of a sovereign country.

We are self-confident, more self-reliant, more secular – we question, we speak out, we take the lead when called for. The marriage equality referendum of 2015 is testament to this courage and compassion.
I want the work to reflect these qualities.’

Come along to the Café to meet Kathrine for a coffee and a chat about the work.
